so Homestuck became this really big thing among my friends while I was away in Jerusalem, and I never felt interested enough in it to see what all the fuss was about.
Then I got back and one day I was hanging out with them, and the conversation topic changed, and I genuinely worried for a split second that I was having a stroke or something because the conversation had turned into word salad
like
the words were English and I understood what all of them meant but they were being put together in orders and ways that made no sense and I had no idea what the fuck was going on.
and finally I was like “What??” and someone said “Oh, Homestuck.”
and so now whenever I stop understanding every word that people are saying in my vicinity I have to take a minute to breathe and tell myself “You’re not dying, there’s nothing wrong with your brain, it’s just Homestuck.”
and that’s my experience with Homestuck the end.
Dear Homestucks,
You know I love some of you dearly, but you do get that this is what your conversations with fellow homestucks sound like, right?
Thanks,
Chelsea
To be fair, is it really that different from, say, Whovians talking in front of non-whovians? Yeah, there’s a lot of terminology and perhaps more squealing than is strictly necessary (no, I lied—it’s totally necessary), but is that really new or strange? I mean, we can even take this out of the science fiction realm pretty easily, w/r/t terminology; do you know how many times I had the following conversation earlier this year?
“Me: Hey, what’s up—?
Other: Reichenbach.
Me: Wha—?
Other: REICHENBACH.
Me: Oh… okay…
Other: NO! NOTHING WILL EVER BE OKAY AGAIN!
Me: *backs away slowly*”
I feel like I might be being unnecessarily defensive here, because I think the original post clearly wasn’t at all hostile (more bemused, if anything—love you, grief-bacon), but it seems like there’s a little bit of an “Ugh, fucking homestuck fans” thing going around that isn’t strictly necessary.
We all have fandoms; it’s one of the things that makes these social groups really great. Most of us get pretty goddamn weird about them, which is also great. And yes, it’s weird to be on the outside of that, and it’s always a little awkward when you can’t help yourself even in the presence of people outside the fandom, because no one wants to exclude or be excluded. But this is a thing that happens when a lot of people who all have a lot of fandoms get together. Homestuck might be a bit worse because, among other reasons, it updates fairly frequently, unlike a lot of other things, but that’s it. It’s not specifically a Homestuck issue, even if that’s the hot new thing among a lot of people we know.
Anyway, if fallingaparttocuttime is any indication, pretty soon the hot new thing will be a crazy-ass pigeon-based dating sim, and we can all look back on this and laugh.
